Drying of food and animal feed products is currently done at centralized large scale drying facilities. Such large facilities reduce operating costs and dryer equipment costs for drying large volumes, yet are hardly compatible with the growing need for smaller batches of by-products, and local small scale production (food forests). Drying small volumes requires complex and costly cold-chain logistics and for such small volumes, the large scale drying facilities often have longer labour intensive start-up and shut down sequences than actual drying time. Furthermore, the use of large quantities of natural gas or woody biomass being burned to generate the high temperature heat for such large conventional drying facilities comes at a substantial economical and environmental cost.

The dryers of Multiphase Dryers were developed to dry affordably at small to medium scale sites using low grade residual heat and/or heat pumps. The use of low temperatures reduces the product degradation (mild drying) and energy costs, a substantial part of the costs of drying.

Applications vary from granular bulk materials such as brewers’ spent grain and press cake from juice production to excess -diced or grated- vegetables. Closing circular food chains while recycling residual heat!

Apart from food applications, a dryer model has been developed suitable drying for larger items such as slightly damp clothing economically. Studies are ongoing into the application for drying fully wet laundry in industrial laundry service companies.
